As Windows 10 begins its final year of official support, Microsoft is executing a familiar game plan for its business customers.

Last April, in separate posts on the Windows IT Pro Blog and on the Microsoft Education Blog, the company revealed its price list for commercial and education customers who want to continue receiving security updates for Windows 10 after the end-of-support deadline arrives on October 14, 2025. The company has previously confirmed that it plans to offer a version of this program for consumers, but those details still a complete mystery.

Here’s what we know so far.

Microsoft is finally launching a single unified Microsoft Teams app that will allow you to switch between personal and work accounts. The new app has been in testing for most of the year, and Microsoft is now rolling it out for Windows and Mac users today.

This app update not only supports work, personal, and education accounts in a single Teams app, but it also improves the experience of switching between different Teams tenants. “You can also join as a guest without signing in,” explains Amit Fulay, vice president of product at Microsoft. “Whether you’re joining a call to connect with a customer or discuss your school’s fall fundraiser, simply select your preferred account the moment you join the meeting.”

Microsoft has had a long and messy history supporting work and personal accounts with Teams. Windows 11 first integrated Teams into the taskbar, but the app only worked with personal accounts. Microsoft then removed this integration from Windows 11 last year, leaving users to have to install two separate Teams apps to access personal or work meetings. It was rather confusing to have Microsoft Teams (free) and Microsoft Teams (work or school) installed and have to make sure you launched the correct version.

Thankfully, the confusing double app situation all goes away with today’s update, so you can simply see personal and work accounts side by side. Notifications are also being improved with this updated app so that you can easily tell which team a notification has come from.

If you already use Microsoft Teams on Windows or Mac, then it will be automatically updated; otherwise, you can download the new app over at Microsoft’s site.

A recent global IT outage saw a problematic CrowdStrike update cause millions of Windows computers to fall foul of Blue Screen of Death (BSoD) errors worldwide, affecting airlines, hospitals, banks, and businesses. While thousands of flights by United, Delta, and American Airlines into and out of the US were canceled due to the failure, Southwest Airlines reportedly continued operations seemingly unaffected.

The problem did not impact the airline in the same way it did its rivals, not because it was running Linux or employing a robust protection method, but because Southwest was still using Windows 3.1, which obviously never received the problematic CrowdStrike update.

To give you an idea of just how outdated this operating system is, Windows 3.1 was originally launched in 1992, and Microsoft ended support for it on December 31, 2001, except for the embedded version, which was officially retired in 2008.

It is said that the only constant is change, which is abundantly clear with the licensing of Oracle Java. Since 2018, with the introduction of a new OpenJDK release cadence and specific long-term support (LTS) versions, we’ve seen four significant modifications to both the license conditions and pricing which have had an impact on enterprises using Java within their organizations.

Initially, we saw the introduction of the Oracle Technology Network License Agreement (OTNLA). Prior to this, everyone had considered the Java platform to be free, including maintenance in the form of regular updates. (Technically, the field of use restriction meant you would need to pay a license fee if you used Java for embedded or single-use applications.)

The OTNLA is much more restrictive. Unless you are using the Oracle JDK for personal use (like playing Minecraft), development, testing, Oracle-approved applications, or in the Oracle Cloud, you will need to pay to buy a Java SE Subscription. The OTNLA applied to Oracle JDK 8 update 211 and later, as well as Oracle JDK 11.

When the next LTS version of Java, JDK 17, was released in September 2021, Oracle introduced another significant revision to their license policy—the No Fee Terms and Conditions (NFTC). On the surface, this appeared less restrictive and states that you can use the Oracle JDK:

Adobe is facing a privacy firestorm after users spotted changes to its terms of use, last updated February 2024, that highlight the company’s right to “access your content through both automated and manual methods.”

It defines “content” as “any text, information, communication, or material, such as audio files, video files, electronic documents, or images, that you upload, import into, embed for use by, or create using the Services and Software.”

Adobe appears to be pushing those terms users via their applications this month with multiple customer responding with distinct displeasure to being effectively strong-armed into accepting them.

The company joins Dropbox, Slack, and Microsoft in being among major SaaS providers to face recent heightened scrutiny over privacy T&Cs or new product releases, with generative AI often the culprit.
