Microsoft accuses Google of ‘shadow campaign’ to influence cloud regulation in Europe
The war of words between the two tech giants heats up as Microsoft releases a blog post attacking Google ahead of their own launch of a new lobby group.
The war of words between the two tech giants heats up as Microsoft releases a blog post attacking Google ahead of their own launch of a new lobby group.
The focus is on a set of terms Microsoft imposed on Windows Server that Google claims harmed competition and raised costs for customers.
Microsoft claims that a European Commission deal prevented them from making security changes that would have blocked the CrowdStrike update.
The lucrative package was filled with incentives in an unsuccessful attempt to convince CISPE members to reject a deal with Microsoft.
The settlement will also see Microsoft reset its software pricing for CISPE members, refund them for lost revenues and evade an EU antitrust investigation triggered by the original complaint.
Allegations that the software giant gained an ‘undue advantage’ by bundling Teams with Office are its first such charges in over a decade.
In exchange, the Amazon-backed CISPE would withdraw their request for the European Commission to investigate Microsoft’s cloud-licensing agreements.
Brussels is reportedly concerned that unbundling Teams from Office 365 “did not go far enough to enable fairness in the market.”
